Drew Provan is a hematology specialist working in London. Originally from Glasgow, Scotland, he studied molecular biology and went on to qualify in medicine, now serving as a consultant hematologist in a London teaching hospital.
Drew has been involved in graphic design and medical illustration for a number of years. He has written, typeset, and illustrated around 50 books on medicine, computing, and art, and also works as a freelance medical illustrator.
Using his scientific and medical knowledge, Drew creates art based on molecules used in clinical medicine and for recreational purposes. Starting with the basic molecule, he redesigns these, bringing a pop art feel to the structures with vivid colors that make the molecular structures visually appealing. His works include analgesics, vitamins, steroids, caffeine, as well as recreational drugs. He also creates art featuring anatomical structures, such as muscle and bone. The ethos behind his art is to help people appreciate the beauty of the common molecules we take as medicines or for health.
Most of Drew's art is sold as giclée prints, framed or unframed, but some works are printed on aluminium (Chromaluxe) and as light boxes. He also offers a wide range of merchandise featuring many of the molecules he has created. His work has been featured in Newsweek, the British Medical Journal, and Oxford Art Weeks.
